What is the secret of your success? Understanding the client’s business and their commercial priorities and developing strong, lasting relationships. I see myself as an extension of the team and try to deliver commercial, succinct, practical advice. I also try to put myself in the client’s shoes; what do they need and how can I best deliver that advice. What drives you? Delivering results for clients; it may be securing protection for a key brand, bringing a successful enforcement action or recovering a commercially important domain name – I enjoy getting the result for clients. What was the most pivotal moment in your business life to date? Bringing one of the first successful “.eu” Complaints at the then new Czech Arbitration Courts. At the time, the Complaints procedure was a new one and required a substantial amount of research and investigation. I thoroughly enjoyed the process and recovering a key domain for a key client felt great. I developed a taste for this type of work and since this case I have enjoyed considerable success with domain name dispute resolution actions at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), EURid and Nominet. This type of work is now a key part of my practice. How do you problem solve? For me, it’s all about identifying and analysing the key issues and then planning an appropriate strategy to achieve the desired result. What is the key to being a great team member? Communication! Who inspired you? Relatively early in my career, we instructed James Mellor QC in relation to urgent, high value and complex clearance work (involving multi-disciplinary issues). His structured approach and the ability to condense so many complex issues into succinct key points (delivered to the client in clear straight forward terms – without “legalese”!) was hugely impressive. How and where do you network? Lots of different ways and places (but some of the great INTA destinations take some beating!) If you could work in another country, which would it be? Canada.
