Overview:

Werther is a trainee patent attorney who joined Barker Brettell after two years as a Licensing and Ventures Manager. During this time, he worked to maximise the impact of the University of Oxford inventions in the life sciences by licensing innovative technology and therapies to industrial partners and facilitating spinout company formation. Previously, he obtained a PhD in Cardiovascular Sciences, which saw him discover a new interaction between proteins inside human blood vessels. Before that, he received a first-class Master’s degree in Chemistry with Biochemistry, during which he built invaluable research experience thanks to multiple summer studentships.

Experience:

  • Supported Oxford academics in creating a multi-institutional spinout company that tackles antimicrobial-resistant pathogens, from initial pitching to venture capitalists to company establishment
  • Licensed various technologies, including recombinant antibodies and genetically modified organisms, to companies ranging from SMEs to global pharmaceutical corporations
  • Worked in several academic laboratories across the UK, spanning the fields of biotechnology, cancer biology, neurodegenerative disorders and vascular biology
