Overview:

Matty is a trainee patent attorney who recently graduated from the University of Oxford, obtaining a Master of Chemistry degree.  During his four years at Oxford, his studies covered a broad range of inorganic, organic and physical chemistry topics. Matty was awarded the Brasenose College Exhibition Award in 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 in recognition of academic achievement.

Experience:

  • Undertook a master’s project that explored the catalytic decomposition of ammonia using mixed sodium-alkaline earth metal amides. Matty enjoyed the real-life relevance of this project, because there is significant potential for ammonia to be used as a hydrogen transport fuel during the search for green sources of energy
  • Worked as an assistant laboratory technician at a chemical company, identifying production cost reductions of their surfactants and perfumes whilst maintaining effectiveness. He primarily worked in Research and Development, but also assisted with Quality Control and Production. This has given Matty an understanding of what it is like to work in industrial chemistry and the importance of having a commercial focus
