All change! OHIM renamed EUIPO

At Barker Brettell it’s never been our favourite acronym, so we’re delighted that as of today, 23 March 2016, the OHIM (Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market, or otherwise known as the ‘CTM Office’) will be renamed the EUIPO (the European Union Intellectual Property Office). Apart from being a dreadful tongue-twister, the old name failed to reflect its role as Europe’s trade mark and design office and so we welcome its new-found clarity. As a consequence, also from today Community trade marks will be renamed European Union trade marks, so it’s goodbye CTM, hello EUTM. This will be a harder one for us to adjust to as CTMs have become a mainstay of our work and part of common parlance for clients and attorneys alike.
