Barker Brettell LLP welcomes new patent attorney partner in Southampton

Specialist Intellectual Property advisor Barker Brettell LLP has appointed a new patent attorney partner, Dr Robin Tyson, who will be based at the firm’s Southampton office.

Robin joins from London-based IP firm J A Kemp, where he focused on patenting inventions originated by several UK universities and in the ‘green energy’ sector, as well as prosecuting patent applications for well-known Japanese consumer electronics companies. A patent expert in physics, engineering, materials science, optics, electronics, telecommunications, medical devices and bio-informatics; Robin has extensive experience advising clients on protecting inventions in cutting-edge technologies ranging from mobile telephony to tidal turbines for generating renewable energy. He moved into the profession in 1994 after completing his PhD at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, where he conducted research in opto-electronics in inorganic semiconductor micro-structures.

Commenting on the appointment, Alan Wilson, patent attorney partner at Barker Brettell LLP said: “The protection of intellectual property is vital for businesses that have built a commercial platform on top of research and development. Robin’s role will assist with the firm’s continued growth, and will help to provide our clients with financial returns on their investments in technology.”

Robin added: “I’m looking forward to using my knowledge and industry expertise to drive the business forward. I enjoy helping people and seeing the difference my work makes both to business and society. It’s very rewarding when a patent project that you’ve worked on results in a company winning a new contract or seeing new technology launched onto the market.”
