Barker Brettell

Patents

Barker Brettell has established a patents department that can offer clients a superior service across a diverse range of technologies, including Chemistry/Biotechnology, Computers/Electronics, Mechanical Engineering, Medical, and Physics/Materials.

Our firm acts before both the UK Intellectual Property Office (UK-IPO) and the European Patent Office (EPO). We also file a considerable number of International (PCT) patent applications, which are a popular option for our clients to initially pursue patent protection in a large number of countries worldwide through a single application.

We deal with drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications, as well as overseeing assignment and licensing programmes, filing and defending Oppositions of European patents, and attending to the renewal of patents. The practitioners in our patents group also have significant experience of attending hearings before the UK and European Patent Offices, including contentious Opposition and Appeal hearings at the EPO. Additionally, we offer a range of advice-based services, such as freedom-to-use searches, patentability searches, due diligence exercises, and watching services.

We understand the value that patents give to a company, protecting the time and money invested in Research and Development and providing a genuine business asset. We believe it is important to get a good feel for our client's business in order to be able to advise appropriately on patent filing and prosecution strategy.

Barker Brettell's patents department comprises personnel having degrees and post-graduate degrees across many technical backgrounds, which enables us to match the particular subject area of an invention with an appropriate member of our team. We believe in ensuring that our client is provided with an advisor who can meet the client's needs.
