Toby focuses on obtaining and advising in general on patents in the electronic, software and business method fields as well as those relating to mechanical ideas. Toby sits on the committee of Chartered Institute of Patent Agents which monitors the law around computer technology related inventions.
Toby’s current work includes activity in the fields of computers, IT related inventions, electroluminescent display devices, software in various fields, telecommunications, switchgear, AC machines, micro-machining, micro- machined devices, electronic devices and also in the mechanical art, with experience in oil exploration, entertainment machines and building products.
Toby joined Barker Brettell in 1994, qualified as both a European Patent Attorney and a Chartered Patent Attorney in 2000 and became a Partner in 2001. He has experience in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications before the UK Intellectual Property Office (UK-IPO) and the European Patent Office (EPO) and abroad. He also has experience of business method patents in the USA and Europe. He is expert in IT activities: both internally with our systems and externally advising clients on their IT inventions.
Toby is a member of the Licensing Executive Society (LES) which helps maintain an exposure to the wider aspects of the law around intellectual property.
Toby obtained a Masters Degree with Honours in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford, covering a broad range of disciplines including electronics, mechanical engineering, structures, fluid mechanics and production engineering which gives a sound educational footing to advise on all of the areas in which he now works. The second half of the course focused on electronics, especially in the area of computer architecture, robotics and control.
Away from work and computers, Toby’s main interest is in triathlon which follows on from his days running on the track which saw him nationally ranked. Toby is now a qualified triathlon coach which helps him get involved in the running of a local triathlon club as well as competing.
