Stephen specialises in physics, electronics, and medical device work but also works on matters involving inventions of a chemical or mechanical nature. He is experienced in dealing with matters concerned with excluded subject matter (such as computer programs, business methods, gaming, medical methods) before both the UK Intellectual Property Office (UK-IPO) and the European Patent Office (EPO).

Stephen entered the patent profession in 2000 and joined Barker Brettell in 2003.  He works with a wide range of clients including small to medium sized businesses, universities, and blue chip companies (including an international electronics company and an international drinks company).  As well as drafting and prosecution work Stephen has also been involved in advising on validity and infringement.

Stephen has a technologically wide-ranging background having an Honours Degree in Chemical Physics from the University of Sussex, a Masters Degree in Optical Fibres and Sensors from the University of Cranfield and a PhD from the University of Cambridge.  His PhD concerned the study of the kinetics of a range of chemical reactions using a pulsed laser system.

Stephen also has a medical slant on his technological background.  He has worked on the development of medical devices and the use of lasers to treat cancer.  This work regularly involved assisting medical staff in the performance of non-invasive treatments of cancer.  Stephen has also worked in the defence field and spent two years managing contracts with various universities to develop optical sensors.

Stephen enjoys outdoor pursuits especially walking and backpacking in the mountains.  Stephen has a young family which now takes up much of his spare time.
