Based in our Southampton Office, Louis practises in all areas of Trade Mark work, including advising on the availability and adoption of new Trade Marks, attending to the registration of marks both nationally and internationally, and assisting with the enforcement of registered and unregistered rights. Louis also has considerable experience in negotiating the settlement of oppositions.

Louis acts for a broad range of clients operating in a number of different fields, including individuals, small to medium enterprises, and large national and multinational companies, and tailors his advice to best suit their commercial needs. He has considerable experience in prosecuting applications before the UK Trade Marks Registry and Community Trade Mark (CTM) Office, attending hearings before the UK Trade Marks Registry, and in negotiating the settlement of oppositions. Louis also takes an active role in the management of large Trade Mark portfolios, and assists clients in addressing instances of Trade Mark infringement and third party conflicts. Louis also attends the International Trade Marks Association (INTA) and European Communities Trade Mark Association (ECTA) conferences.

Louis joined Barker Brettell in 1998, having previously spent two years in the Trade Marks Department of BTR plc. In 1999 he spent a year on secondment with a large multinational company, assisting in managing their Trade Mark portfolio. This experience in industry has given Louis a strong understanding of the additional factors that impact upon decisions taken by business regarding intellectual property. Louis qualified as a Trade Mark Attorney in 2002 and became a Partner with Barker Brettell in 2007.

Louis obtained an Honours Degree in Business Studies at Kingston University in 1996, covering a number of areas including commercial, company and European competition law. As part of his degree, Louis spent a year in marketing roles with British Telecom and Johnson & Johnson.

Louis enjoys reading contemporary fiction, photography, and spending time with his family and two young children.
