John P Hawtree |
John specialises in patent work involving physics, engineering and computer implemented inventions. He has experience in drafting and prosecuting UK and overseas patent applications.
During his time with Barker Brettell John has gained experience in drafting and prosecuting patent application for UK clients. Technological fields in which he has worked include ablutionary systems, beverage dispense devices, medical apparatus, entertainment equipment and vehicle parts and systems. He has also researched the provisions for software protection across countries in Europe and the protection of designs through the international registration system.
Before joining Barker Brettell in 2007 John completed his BSc Honours degree in Physics at the University of Warwick. The course provided an excellent grounding in core physics subjects including quantum and classical mechanics, nuclear and particle physics, solid state physics, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, waves, astronomy and cosmology. It also provided the opportunity to pursue more specialised subjects including microscopy, medical physics, nanotechnology, geophysics and programming.
Following completion of his BSc John undertook an MSc in Management of Intellectual Property at Queen Mary, University of London, achieving the distinction classification. Successful completion of the Queen Mary course means that he is part qualified, having studied patent, trademark, copyright, design and basic English law. The course also included a twenty week module in competition law which has provided an added dimension to his understanding. A highlight was participating in the European Intellectual Property Institutes Network (EIPIN) programme for selected intellectual property students from top institutions across Europe. The programme included conferences at the European Patent Office in Munich and in Gerzensee, Switzerland.
Away from work John is a dedicated musician, playing cornet and trumpet with brass and swing bands and orchestras. This has provided many travel opportunities. He enjoys a variety of sports particularly squash, table tennis and snooker. John is also an automotive and aviation enthusiast.
