Catherine practises in a wide range of Trade Mark matters, especially in advising upon the freedom to use and the registrability of Trade Marks, and filing and prosecuting Trade Mark applications around the world, in particular UK, Community and International applications. Catherine has considerable expertise in the negotiation of settlements and conflict matters.
Catherine acts for a wide range of domestic and overseas clients, from small-to-medium enterprises, to large national and multinational companies. This has resulted in exposure to all types of Trade Mark issues, including searching, filing and prosecuting applications, portfolio reviews and management, assignment and licensing programmes, attending hearings at the UK Trade Marks Registry and contentious matters such as infringement of Trade Mark rights, counterfeiting, oppositions, revocation and invalidity actions.
Catherine joined the Trade Marks Department of Barker Brettell in 1996. She qualified at the first attempt by examination in 1999 and was awarded the Peter Fitzgibbon Memorial Award for achieving the highest mark in the country for one of her professional examinations. She became a Partner in 2001 and has responsibility for a team of qualified and trainee attorneys. Catherine regularly attends the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (ITMA) and International Trade Marks Association (INTA) conferences.
Catherine graduated from the University of Birmingham with an Honours Degree in Law. After obtaining her degree, Catherine completed the Legal Practice Course (Diploma) for Solicitors, specialising in business law and commercial and civil litigation. This course offered not only academic training, but also practical training in core skills such as client care, negotiating, drafting letters and agreements and oral presentations.
Catherine has a good knowledge of French and German and has a basic knowledge of Italian.
In her spare time, Catherine enjoys spending time with her young sons, playing netball and reading.
