Andrew specialises in cases involving electronics, engineering and computer software. He has a particular interest in the field of automotive electronics and systems, especially electrical power steering systems. He has also drafted and dealt with the prosecution of applications in a number of fields from telecommunications systems to simple mechanical devices. He also deals with design and copyright issues.
Andrew works for a variety of the firm’s major UK clients, which has provided him with considerable experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications before both the UK Intellectual Property Office (UK-IPO) and the European Patent Office (EPO). He also deals with work from overseas attorney firms before the UK-IPO and the EPO, which regularly involves attending hearings at the EPO before the Opposition and Appeal Boards.
Andrew joined Barker Brettell in 1995 to help develop the now well established computer/electronics group. He qualified as a UK Patent Attorney in 1999 with a prize for excellence, a European Patent Attorney in 2000, and he became a Partner in 2001. In addition to his patent prosecution work, Andrew also overseas the running of the records department and the maintenance of the firm’s computerised records system.
Andrew studied Electronic Engineering at the University of Liverpool from 1989 to 1992 covering a diverse range of topics from electrical machine drives to telecommunications and electromagnetics. He concentrated on analogue and digital circuit design, electronics and telecommunications. He graduated with a first class Honours Degree in 1992. He then obtained a PhD in 1995 in the field of optical/electronic sensor design. His work, which was sponsored by Lucas Industries plc, involved research into a range of optical sensors.
Outside work, Andrew enjoys spending time with his family or pottering in the garden. He also enjoys camping and fell walking.
