Mark specialises in patenting inventions within the electronics, computing, mechanical and medical devices/healthcare fields. He has extensive experience of drafting and prosecuting patent applications for local and international clients including individual inventors, start-up companies, universities and multi-national corporations.

He currently works on a diverse range of technologies in areas including mass data storage; data encryptography; networking and telecommunications, electrical power distribution, semiconductor lighting; high-energy security screening devices; radar and defence systems, automotive engines; general mechanical devices; and medical devices.

Mark joined Barker Brettell in 2009, after having trained with a large private practice firm of patent attorneys. Prior to joining the patent profession, Mark spent several years working as a senior software developer in the City of London, where he specialised in developing object-oriented interfaces for market data feeds. He qualified as a UK Chartered Patent Attorney in 2008.

Mark read astrophysics at the University of Birmingham, where he was also awarded a PhD for his ground-breaking work on mapping the coronal X-ray emissions from active stars within our own Galaxy. In recognition of his contributions to astrophysical research, Mark was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1998.

In his spare time, Mark can usually be found carrying out performance upgrades to his MG car, cycling around Birmingham or resting with a good book. His interests also include cooking, hill walking and amateur astronomy.
