Prior to joining Barker Brettell in 2008, Carl spent over a decade with the patents group of the Defence Research Agency (subsequently QinetiQ), where his work covered a range of technical areas including quantum electronics, non-linear optics, fibre-optics, radar and RF/microwave electronics, semiconductor devices & fabrication, secure communication systems and liquid crystal displays.  He qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2005.

Carl read physics at Imperial College London and carried out PhD and post-doctoral research at the University of St Andrews, where he worked on diode-pumped solid-state lasers and their application to pumping modelocked lasers and optical parametric oscillators.  He also carried out post-doctoral research at the University of Bristol, where he worked on various aspects of optical communication.

Outside of work, Carl enjoys hill-walking, cycling (mountain and touring), improving his proficiency in French, German & Italian and playing the guitar.
